In northeast of China, people commonly use double window to keep warm for their house, however, how to evaluate the advantage between insulating glass and double window? Here to make the following comparison.

From the results in terms of insulation, without considering the frame structure and material, both two kinds of glass structure using two pieces of glass and have an air compartment. It should be side in a draw on the insulation. But in fact there is big difference in window sealing, as we know that double windows are majorly adopted steel frame or wood frame, which sealing function is poorer than insulating glass. So the insulation of I.G. is better than double window.

Remark: insulating glass majorly use high quality sealant (butyl sealant and silicone sealant) to do sealing.

From the cost perspective, as insulating glass window commonly uses aluminum frame or UPVC frame and again adding the cost of I.G., their cost is two or three times higher than double windows. If the double windows also adopt aluminum frame or UPVC frame, based on its structure thickness and having two open windows, it advantage on the cost is not obvious, however, as the improvement of sealing function, its insulating will be equal to I.G..

Speaking from the noise effect, as the I.G. is essentially connected as a whole and the air compartment is generally small, only 6 mm, under the action of transmission and coupling resonance, its sound effect is not better than double window.

In terms of anti-condensation, as the air compartment in double window does not dry, we often see windows were totally covered by frost in winter morning and even to appear freeze phenomenon. Through above problems, we can conclude that double windows do not have anti-frost function. At this point, insulating glass has absolute advantage.

From the development trend, the insulating glass will replace the double window. As the development of economic, peoples’ request to living environment will be higher than before. Considering the I.G. features of

simple structure, beautiful appearance and full-featured, it will be inevitable development.
